Border Lads Go “Always a Little Further” for Who Dares Cares

 

Who Dares Cares would like to say a huge thank you to the “Border Lads”, a group of lifelong friends and veterans of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, following the successful completion of their Kc2c Cycle Ride across Scotland.

The challenge saw the team take on a demanding four-day journey from Stranraer to Berwick-upon-Tweed, travelling across southern Scotland from 20–23 July 2026.

With an average age of 64, the Border Lads set themselves the challenge not only to test themselves physically, but to raise money and awareness in support of Who Dares Cares and KOSB Benevolence and Heritage.

Their route took them from Stranraer to the Gatehouse of Fleet on Day 1, on to Lockerbie on Day 2, Selkirk on Day 3, before the final push through Eyemouth and on to the finish at Berwick-upon-Tweed on Day 4.

£3,150 Raised for Who Dares Cares

 

On Saturday, Who Dares Cares was proud to receive a cheque for an incredible £3,150, raised through the Border Lads’ efforts.

The cheque was presented by Lt Col (Retd) Gordon “Ginge” Vevers to Calum MacLeod, KOSB veteran and co-founder of Who Dares Cares.

The achievement was, however, marked by great sadness following the passing of Maj (Retd) D. A. “OHH” Hunter, a much-loved friend, leader and member of the team.

Speaking at the presentation, Calum said:

“Today is dampened by the passing of Maj Derek Hunter, a true friend and leader who was part of this team. He wanted the team to continue with the challenge as he knew the difference it would make to veterans and their families.

“Even in passing he is still supporting others, along with his buddies – all Late Entry officers who joined as boys. A true Band of Brothers.”

These men have demonstrated exactly what it means to continue looking out for one another long after military service has ended.

The £3,150 raised for Who Dares Cares will help us continue providing vital support to serving personnel, veterans and their families when they need it. Just as importantly, the challenge has helped raise awareness of those for whom the battles are never over.

To the Border Lads, their families, support team and everyone who sponsored or encouraged them along the route: thank you.

You went a little further for others, and the difference that makes should never be underestimated.
